International Study Abroad
"...there are many ways to enrich learning, including an international trip as part of the experience. But crossing borders is not synonymous with study abroad. Let's not confuse educational enrichment, international or otherwise, with study abroad."
-CIEE: Council on International Educational Exchange
The Office of International Programs at Northeastern State University is committed to providing NSU students with quality international academic opportunities through its study abroad programs to insure that our students become successful members and active participants in the global community. The study abroad program at NSU strives to adhere to the following standards and guidelines which are recommended by the following professional associations: Council on International Educational Exchange; the Forum on Education Abroad; and NAFSA: Association of International Educators.
- All study abroad programs at NSU will have identifiable learning outcomes and encourage inter-cultural understanding as an integral part of the learning process.
- There is adequate preparation for the learning environment abroad, including pre-departure activities, orientation, and opportunities for language development if appropriate. NSU will insure that all participating students will have adequate medical insurance, including coverage for medical evacuation and repatriation, for the duration of their study abroad program.
- Health and safety issues are paramount and must be addressed for every component of the study abroad program, including the relative safety of the country and site of study, living conditions of study abroad participants, adequate health information and the proximity of in-country health care and emergency assistance.
- Student selection for study abroad programs is open and fair and the home institution's student conduct code is transferable to study abroad venues.
- There will be adequate personnel, faculty, support staff, administration and budget to support and provide assistance to students participating in the study abroad program.
- NSU will insure that procedures will be in place to insure our students act with consideration and respect toward the host culture and understand their role as guests in the country where they are studying.
- The program structure should be academically rigorous, substantive and meet the degree and learning requirements of the home institution. For each three semester hours of credit, students should complete 40-45 classroom contact hours and an additional 80-90 hours of field work, readings, and related activities integral to the course. The International Programs Advisory Committee (IPAC) at NSU recognizes that merely visiting an international destination - with a modicum of academic content added for good measure - does not constitute a viable study abroad program.
- Financial aid, tuition assistance, scholarship and other student support programs will be developed to encourage broad and ongoing student participation in all NSU study abroad programs.
- All study abroad programs at NSU will be reviewed and monitored by the NSU International Programs Advisory Committee.
NSU students who have studied abroad participate in a transformational experience and return with a more profound understanding of other cultures, of international issues, of the barriers to global understanding, and of themselves.
